If you haven’t already binged the final season of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, catch up on the series and this interview with our very own Tyler Cotton! Congrats on a great run as ‘Melvin’!!

I’ve known Tyler since I was his instructor at Vancouver Film School. He always struck me as an honest, kind, and talented actor.

After he graduated from VFS, Tyler continued studying with me in my studio classes, and one night after class, he stopped me to ask if I had a couple minutes to look over this audition he has for tomorrow. There were two short scenes for an exciting new show called the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, so we sat down to discuss it, and the character of Melvin.

What Tyler came to understand very quickly about Melvin as we broke down his scenes, was that Melvin is a bit old-fashioned, somewhat quirky, and even awkward under some circumstances.  We discussed the scenes and their action, but also… what type of costume would help magnify and embody these character traits for his audition?

…A BOW-TIE!! 

The next day, Tyler ran out the door to purchase his first bowtie, and the rest is history.

This simple decision to add a bowtie to Tyler’s character added the perfect touch and amplified his natural sensibilities about his character. The creative team embraced it, and the bowtie lasted throughout the show’s 4 Season run. The devil is definitely in the details, which is quite literally true for this show.

20 episodes later, and with the series wrapped, I want to give Tyler a heartfelt congratulations on a terrific run as Melvin! Hats off & bow-ties up to you, Tyler!
